Looting of Flood Relief Supplies by Yenagoa Residents Amidst Unrest

In Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, a number of locals have forcibly entered a warehouse housing relief supplies intended for those affected by the 2022 flooding.

Situated along Isaac Boro Expressway in the state capital, the warehouse was subjected to an attack on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

This act of looting has taken place amidst widespread discontentment stemming from the removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria. The removal of these subsidies has resulted in a significant hike in petrol prices, consequently causing an upsurge in the cost of commodities and services.

The leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had pledged to furnish Nigerians with relief packages to alleviate the impacts of the fuel subsidy removal. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether the looted supplies in Yenagoa were part of the promised assistance.

Despite certain food items within the warehouse having reached their expiration date, this did not deter the residents from partaking in the looting.

As of now, the regional government, led by Senator Douye Diri, has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
